Mekong Eyes Explorer Cruise

The most beautiful option to travel from Cambodia to Southern Vietnam — or vice versa — is to take the various waterways and therefore the traditional transport routes, where travelers can watch the hustle and bustle on the rivers and canals. The new Mekong Eyes Explorer is perfect for your individual river cruise (from 1 to 3 nights) on the northern route of the Mekong connecting Southern Vietnam with Phnom Penh. Our new boutique cruiser is designed to roam through the narrow and winding rivers and canals of the river system that cannot be accessed by the larger cruise boats. That way we can show you the hidden gems of the northern Mekong Delta. The cruise ship has 12 superior cabins that are all designed as outside cabins, slightly larger than the ones on the Mekong Eyes Classic. In addition to the deluxe cabins the cruiser has 4 suites, which are located on the upper deck and equipped with a private balcony. The interior design is using a lot of local materials and design patterns and is hand-crafted by local craft masters.

Itinerary

Sunday: Phnom Penh – Tan Chau – Cao Lanh

Sunday: Phnom Penh – Tan Chau – Cao Lanh

  • In the morning we pick you up at your hotel in Phnom Penh and bring you to the jetty where our boat departs. An English speaking guide accompanies all our speed boats to ensure your comfort and well being on board and to support the immigration to Vietnam. Drinks and snacks area available on our comfortable speed boats.
  • Around 13h the speed boat arrives in Tan Chau and you board your river cruiser. After a refreshing welcome drink, we show you our on-board facilities and your cozy cabin. Enjoy your lunch while the boat starts cruising through the branches and canals of the Mekong. Sit back on the sundeck or in our lounge and marvel the amazing sights – the lush vegetation and the diverse daily life of the people in the Mekong Delta. Round the day off with a Sunset Cocktail Party at the bar while the sun sets over the magnificent water landscape.
Monday: Cao Lanh – Cu Lao Gieng – Sa Dec

Monday: Cao Lanh – Cu Lao Gieng – Sa Dec

  • Wake up well rested to the sound of the river and get ready for another exciting day of sightseeing in the Mekong Delta. At 6:30h the cruise vessel sets off for a sunrise cruise. Watch the locals go about their daily work drying exotic fruits and building ships on the wooden yards while enjoying an early breakfast.
  • We cruise towards the Island of Cu Lao Gieng. Located between Chau Doc and Sa Dec on the small island of Cu Lao Gieng, the monastery here was once an important convent. It could accommodate more than 1,000 people and included an orphanage, a school, a hospice and a leprosy centre. Today, Cu Lao Gieng is mainly a retreat for retired nuns. The large building is completely cut off from villages and located in the middle of fields and green jungle. You will be very surprised to see such an architectural impressive monastery in the middle of nowhere. If you have time you should take the opportunity to visit the Catholic monastery which was built on the island in 1875 by French nuns of Saint Paul de Chartres.
  • In the afternoon we cruise towards the charming city of Sa Dec. There you can see the busy and colorful local market, enjoy a coffee on the nice riverside promenade and visit a nearby flower village with orchards. The charming town still has a lot of colonial architecture, in particular the old market, the church and many old villas and trader’s houses. We visit one of them, a beautifully renovated traditional house of a Chinese trader’s family. This sumptuous building belonged to the main character of the novel „The Lover” and indeed to the lover of Marguerite Duras.
  • Get back on board and enjoy a drink at the bar or relax on deck as the sun sets over the magnificent water landscape of the Mekong River. The cruise boat anchors for the night. The day ends with a delicious on-board dinner.
Tuesday: Cai Be – Mang Thit - Tra On

Tuesday: Cai Be – Mang Thit - Tra On

  • After breakfast, we enjoy a rowing boat excursion through the hidden small canals of Tan Phong Islet on a sampan. We also visit some of the local candy or rice cake making production or boat through the green water landscape to see local villages, verdant orchards or rice paddies.
  • Later in the morning your can discover the nearby town by foot or explore the small side canals of the Mekong on a bicycle. In the afternoon you can disembark for a guided leisurely stroll through a village and the surrounding fruit orchards or rice fields. Meet the friendly locals and taste the local produce and fruits.
  • Get back on board and enjoy a drink at the bar or relax on deck as the sun sets over the magnificent water landscape of the Mekong river. The cruise boat will anchor for the night. The day ends with a delicious on-board dinner. You stay overnight on board your floating hotel in the Mekong Delta.

Good

We were picked up at our hotel ready for a 4 hour drive to meet our crew and boat. On arrival our guide and waiter Dave met us and provided an orientation of the boat. Our cabin had a king size bed (2 king singles pushed together) allowing for twin bedding if required. A large bathroom with toilet and shower was attached to the room. The shower was dirty and mould visible on the shower curtain. Meals were amazing! 4 course lunches and dinners and all very fresh food from local markets. Breakfasts included choice of eggs and fruit. Beverages could be bought onboard but wine was very expensive ranging from 550000 dong up. Dave our guide, lead us everywhere and was very informative about his home land. He provided a wealth of knowledge and was very helpful throughout the tour. For the price range, the level of service was outstanding and can recommend to anyone who is visiting Saigon and the Mekong Delta.

Prefect...Awesome....Fantastic We spent 3 days 2 nights on Mekong Eyes 2 and it was the prefect way to Cruz the Mekong. 3 Adults & 1 4 year old and we all loved it. The food was amazing and the crew were awesome. Everything was done so well from the walk through the village, to the floating markets & the bike ride was great. We even visited a small family farm and had afternoon tea there. Relaxing on the boat watching the world pass by was a great way to chill out with a Cocktail in hand. Get up early and watch the sun rise, well worth it. Thanks Mekong Eyes for a fantastic time. Well worth doing. 10 out of 10.

Took a two night cruise from Can Tho (starts and ends there) on the rivers and canals of the Mekong Delta. It is a wonderful experience. My favorite part was just sitting and watching the boats on the river, life on the shore, and the storms come in. We had several shore excursions, but some were cut short or cancelled because of heavy rain storms. We had cooking lessons on board instead. The crew is excellent and attentive, but not intrusive. The food was Vietnamese, which I loved. But let the crew know ahead of time if you have dislikes or dietary restrictions. One person did not like coriander (cilantro), which is a common ingredient in Vietnam. They are extremely accommodating to dietary restrictions. There were people with celiac and vegetarians who got special dishes. Most of the common areas are not air conditioned so it can get hot and sticky. There are fans in the dining room. You cabin is very well air conditioned, so you can find relief there. The cabins are small, but very nice. Beds were very comfortable. I found the washroom to be very big and functional. I look forward to returning to Vietnam and taking a longer trip on one of their cruises.

Good

We spent April travelling in Vietnam and this was our top experience. We really could not praise it enough. From the collection point in Can Tho to drop off in Chau Doc our trip was a superb experience. Organisation was impeccable, meals of gourmet quality, service just right, and the experiences - villages, orchards, the Mekong itself, tributaries and canals, sampan tours, seeing Viet Cong encampments, Would love to some kind of repeat !! Very, very well done Gecko Eyes and particularly well done to Ching our very capable, helpful, knowledgeable and friendly Guide
